Neural correlates of consciousness are processes and behaviours in the brain that occur at the same time as subjective conscious experience, for example, global synchronisation of oscillations where distant parts of the brain fire in the same rhythm. As the maxim goies "correlation does not imply causation", so one cannot say that the experince of consciousness is because of the particular neural phenomenon, but it does help to sift and inspire more theoretical, philosophical and practical approaches to consciousness.
